Solar lights are powered by solar collection panels fixed to the top of a pole or in some cases incorporated in the light head. These collection panels are made up of photo-voltaic (often referred to as PV cells) that convert sunlight into a direct electrical current (DC) which can then be used to power an electronic system. Photo-voltaic cells are created by using two films of semiconducting materials such as silicon, one piece of which is given a positive electrical charge and other, a negative charge, which is then used to create an electric field. This is what charges the batteries throughout the day. Lights are automatically activated at dusk when night-time is detected through the consistent drop in voltage through the PV cells. The solar controller detects that the charge cycle has finished and automatically sends power to illuminate the light. Excess electricity generated during the day is channelled to the battery storage system, where it can be retained and used as needed.
Vizona provide unique urban lighting solutions built for Australian conditions. We have adapted our product range to use materials that are resilient, long-lasting and that have a minimal carbon footprint.
