When looking to install car park lighting there are two main elements that must be considered: Safety and Security.
The Right Amount of Illumination
Vehicles and circulation routes must be well lit, and pedestrians should be visible to drivers at all times. In addition to ensuring the safety of users, carpark lighting design should also ensure that users feel safe. Poor lighting design can lead to deep shadows and people only being visible in silhouette, creating a sense of insecurity.
There are number of guidelines and other standards that should be observed when designing car park lighting. These regulations cover criteria such as lighting layout, to reduce shadows and lumens required. The following provides some of the criteria to be met for external car parks.
Lighting for Exterior Car Parks:
a) For exterior car parks with low night-time activity, provide a minimum average illuminance of 10 lux and a minimum illuminance of at least 4 lux, which is double the recommended levels in AS/NZS 1158.1.1 Road Lighting, the SAA Public Lighting Codes.
b) For exterior car parks with high night-time activity, provide a minimum average illuminance of 20 lux and a minimum illuminance of 10 lux, which significantly exceeds AS/NZS 1158.1.1 Road Lighting, the SAA Public Lighting Codes.
c) Wherever parking spaces are reserved for people with disabilities, higher levels of illumination should be specified, generally more than twice the minimum average illuminance.
